Forest

Cloven hoof upon moss covered ground

Delicately picking her way with care

Step by step through dappled sunlight

And gentle breezes

Velvet of fur and small of form

Twitching nose and tall ears

Just visible from the cool, dark warren

That he calls home

Slit-eyed in the light

This horned and feathered being

Fluffs up against the morning dew

And grips the crook of the tree in taloned feet

Dark and mysterious

Yellow eyes flashing wild and feral

Singing in celebration of the dawn

The swift hunter calls to the world

The forest whisper’s its secrets on the wind

Traveling swift and quiet through the world

Speaking of wild and secret things

But so few have the hearts to hear it

In celebration of Earth Day and in accordance with the NaPoWriMo prompt for the day.
